Wardrobes & storage

Wardrobes measured to the wall you have

Almost no wall in a finished flat is truly straight or truly plumb. A fitted wardrobe is made to absorb that; a catalogue box is not, which is why it ends up with a gap down one side and a filler strip over it.

Hinged or sliding

This is the first decision and it changes the whole layout.

  • Hinged gives you the full opening — you can see everything at once and use the full depth of every shelf. It needs roughly 600 mm of clear swing in front, which a compact bedroom may not have.
  • Sliding costs no floor space, which makes it the answer in a tight room or against a bed. The trade-off is real: you only ever see half the wardrobe, and the track takes roughly 100 mm off the usable depth.

Standard carcass depth is about 600 mm, because that is what a shirt on a hanger needs. Anything shallower and clothes press against the door.

The inside matters more than the doors

A wardrobe is bought on its shutters and lived with on its internals. Worth planning against what actually gets stored:

  • Full-height hanging for sarees, kurtas and coats — these are longer than a shirt section allows.
  • Double hanging where only shirts and trousers go, which doubles capacity in the same width.
  • Drawers on full-extension channels for folded items, not open shelves that collapse into a pile.
  • A lockable drawer or a small safe enclosure.
  • Loft storage above for suitcases and seasonal bedding, with shutters that a person of average height can actually reach.
  • A mirror — inside a shutter or as a full-length panel — decided early, because it changes the door construction.

Dust, damp and the Hyderabad reality

Two local conditions decide how a wardrobe ages here. The first is dust, which is relentless and gets in through any gap the shutters do not close cleanly against — so shutter alignment is a functional detail, not a cosmetic one. The second is monsoon humidity against an external wall, which is where clothes acquire that damp cupboard smell. Where a wardrobe backs onto an outside wall, the back panel should stand clear of the masonry rather than sit tight against it.

Ventilation holes in the back panel and a loft that is not sealed airtight both help. So does not building the wardrobe over an unaddressed damp patch, which needs fixing first, not covering.

Finishes

The same range as kitchen shutters applies — laminate, acrylic, membrane and PU — with one difference: bedroom wardrobes are large, uninterrupted surfaces at eye level, so the finish is far more visible than in a kitchen. Matte laminates and veneers with grain forgive dust and fingerprints; high-gloss acrylic across a three-metre wardrobe will show every mark under a downlight.

Questions

Wardrobes & storage — common questions

Sliding or hinged wardrobe for a small bedroom?

Sliding, in most cases. Hinged doors need around 600 mm of clear swing space in front, which a compact bedroom usually cannot spare next to a bed. The trade-off is that a sliding wardrobe only ever opens half at a time and the track costs about 100 mm of depth.

What depth should a wardrobe be?

About 600 mm for hanging storage, because that is what a shirt on a hanger needs. Less than that and clothes press against the shutters and crease.

Can a wardrobe be built against an external wall?

Yes, but the back panel should stand clear of the masonry rather than sit tight against it, and any existing damp needs to be dealt with first rather than covered over.
